Mum's Sunflowers Print
With their vibrant yellow petals and towering stalks Sunflowers have always felt to me like someone captured all of the joyfulness they could find and contained it in these happy little creatures.
In Greek mythology, sunflowers came from the water nymph Clytie, who finds herself consumed by an unrequited love for Helios, God of the sun. Helios chooses another goddess over Clytie and in her heartbreak, she watches as Helios traverses the sky in his radiant golden chariot day by day until eventually she weakens and transforms into a sunflower herself. From this tale, sunflowers have come to represent loyalty, adoration and longevity.
The power of sunflowers has become quite a symbol in my life. These were painted after my Mum came home with sunflowers while I was visiting the UK last Summer.
