Kate Florence
Kate Florence is a British artist who holds a BA in Fine Art from Winchester School Of Art. Her practice was further shaped by a period of study in Milan, where she engaged in traditional painting at NABA before graduating in 2015.
Her work operates at the intersection of memory, form and cultural trace. Drawing from the sensory landscapes of her childhood in the UK and her present life in Australia, Florence translates everyday experiences into composed and playful gestures. Her distinctive line work and attunement to colour, function as a language for exploring nostalgia and the human necessity for animals and natural landscape through whimsical cultural references, rich textural landscapes and the human existence.
Themes of her practice include the construction of personal memory, the poetics of the everyday, and the tension between playfulness and structure. Through these elements, she cultivates a visual language that is both intuitive and considered, allowing her paintings to operate as spaces of reflection and recollection.
Since relocating to Melbourne in 2018, Florence has developed a robust studio practice and exhibited internationally. Her 2021 debut solo exhibition at Saint Cloche in Sydney marked a significant entry into the gallery sector, selling out upon opening. She has since presented work in Sydney, Singapore, Melbourne, Los Angeles, and London. She currently works full-time from her studio on Kabi-Kabi country in Noosa, Australia.
